Stanislao Cannizzaro worked at Palermo University for about ten years. There he managed to establish a modern and well-equipped chemical laboratory. His international fame attracted co-workers even from abroad: Naquet, Lieben, and Körner came to Palermo to work with him. This greatly improved the quality of teaching and of research in Palermo, which became a worldwide acknowledged center of chemical culture. Abstract Combinatorics has many applications in different disciplines, however, only a few studies have explored students’ combinatorial thinking at the upper secondary and tertiary levels concurrently. The present research is a grounded theory study of eight Year 12 and five undergraduate students, who have participated in semi-structured interviews and responded to eight combinatorial tasks. Using PISA 2000 data, this study presents an international comparison of the way social origin influences reading comprehension performances, looking at a variety of variables, some external to the school system, others internal. A variable's effect is strong in proportion to the strength of its association to father's occupation and degree to which it favors performance. The study uses the method of path analysis to distinguish between these two aspects. The French situation is presented, then compared to twelve other European Union countries.
